Location and history: Namibia is located
in Southwest Africa and borders South Africa, Botswana, Angola, Zambia and
the Atlantic Ocean. Namibia was a German colony until WWI when the League of
Nations placed it under the administration of South Africa. Despite a
guerilla war that began in 1966, Namibia remained under South Africa's
authority until finally gaining independence in 1990.
Religion: Namibia has benefited greatly
from previous generations of mission work within southern Africa;
unfortunately, the people of Namibia have been called "a forgotten people"
due to a lack of work there today. The country is said to be nearly 80%
Christian; however, a large number of this percent includes nominal
Christians, Mormons and adherents of syncretistic religions. In fact, the
Joshua Project states that Namibia is less than two percent evangelical.
There has also been noted a turning away from Christianity in the nation due
to a need for native Namibian Christian leaders. At Community Hope School,
we are raising up those leaders.
